The Stars During a Blood Moon

Updated: Feb 12

Over the course of a few years now, we have witnessed a number of Blood Moon events. We remember the 2014-2015 Blood Moon Tetrad which got a lot of attention. And there have been other Blood Moon events prior to and since the Tetrad.

If you have been able to witness a full lunar eclipse that results in the Moon turning red, it is compelling in its beauty. Add to that the understanding of the spiritual sign this signifies and the compelling nature surrounding this type of event increases.

Those of us, who understand that our God uses phenomena in the skies as a way to announce future events, become ever more watchful.

Yet, there is something else to watch - it’s not all about the Blood Moon or its warning.

To begin with, let’s consider what happens during a Blood Moon lunar eclipse. Simply put, the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow and becomes diminished in its ability to shine and project the Sun’s light. Its light is almost totally gone.

When the brightness of the Moon is diminished, something else happens. It allows all the stars to become highly visible against the darkness of the night sky. Even within city limits, the stars become far more visible than usual, because they are the only source of light in the heavens for those few moments.

Now, let’s look at the spiritual perspective of this event.

Through our Hebraic and Messianic understandings, we have come to know that the Moon represents God’s people – spiritual Israel. It is the Moon that projects the light of the Sun upon the Earth at night. That is what spiritual Israel does as detailed in Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:15 to “go into all the world, preach the gospel unto everyone, teach all nations to observe all things, I have commanded you.” Spiritual Israel is projecting God’s good news to this dark world.

Then we have Joel 2, Acts 2 and Revelation 6 which prophecy about the literal darkening of the moon as an announcement of the impending Day of the LORD. Not only are these scriptures prophesying about the physical event, this is also referring to the time when spiritual Israel (aka, the Moon) will be diminished in its ability to project the light (gospel) of God (aka the Sun) upon the peoples of the world (aka, the dark Earth). We understand this to mean there will be a famine of God’s word upon this Earth and a time of great darkness and dread (Amos 8). Many associate this with end time events but it is not part of the tribulation (see articles mentioned below for clarification).

Hope, peace and much more comes with the increase in the ability of the stars to shine.

God is telling His people that their task(s) upon this Earth will change. The diminishing of the light of the Moon means that His people will no longer “go into all the world…”. That is the purpose of the Moon.

The purpose of stars is different. According to the Strong’s Concordance, the first usage of the word ‘star’ in Hebrew is (H3556) kokav – a masculine noun meaning “of Messiah, brothers, youth, numerous progeny, personification, God’ omniscience (figuratively)”. This is found in Genesis 1:16 detailing creation. It is well understood that the first usage of a Hebrew word lays the foundation for the usage of that word throughout the scriptures.

Take note of the definition... stars represent those who are "OF Messiah"; they represent descendants such as was promised to Abraham; and they represent how great our God in heaven (personification) is. Clearly, we can see that the stars represent God’s people but now with a more specific “of Messiah” label.

What do stars do? In the dark night sky, they form shapes which we know as constellations. As well, some stars are brighter than others – take for example, the North Star. Utilizing the star shapes and the brighter stars is how we are able to move upon this Earth in the dark.

The stars become our guides. Think about ancient mariners and travelers using the stars to point them in the right direction. A well known case-in-point is the Star of Bethlehem which guided the three kings to the birth of Yeshua. That is the purpose of stars. They work together to guide those on the Earth.

Blood Moon events are a multi-level message from God. Not only are they a warning to the people of the Earth, these events also provide a highly encouraging message to His people who are identified as those “of Messiah”. We now understand that He is telling us it’s time to take on the newer role of guiding those on the darkened Earth, just like the constellations and bright stars do for mariners during their night voyages. As a third message in this phenomena, He is telling us that as shining stars we get to show this world that God does keep His promises (by being Abraham’s descendants and as numerous as the stars in the sky).

Even though His people will at some point in time be diminished in light and won’t be able to ‘go into all the world preaching the gospel’ anymore, they will continue to exalt God in numbers and in their purpose by guiding those who look up. As stars, our job as His servants "of Messiah" continues, even through the time of famine and dread.

Let this mind be in you that is in Messiah Yeshua.
